I always print directly from my camera to my Canon printer using the Canon Direct Print function. If I change the firmware to make my camera PictBridge-compatible, will I still be able to print with the Canon Direct Print functions?

Yes, you will still be able to print that way.
This firmware update adds the PictBridge functions to your camera. Therefore, you can print directly from your camera to your printer even if you change the firmware of your camera.

Note, however, that different camera models may have different displays on the camera screen, or different paper compatibility.

What equipment is needed to print with PictBridge?

The basic requirements are (1) a PictBridge-compatible digital camera or digital video camera, (2) a PictBridge-compatible printer, and (3) a connecting cable. Each of these requires the appropriate battery, memory, printer paper, etc. The PowerShot/DIGITAL IXUS camera series comes with the IFC-300PCU interface cable for PictBridge-compatible printer connections.

Are operations on a PictBridge connection the same for all digital cameras and printers?
If both are Canon products, the operations are fundamentally the same. When used in combination with other manufacturers' products, the operations are determined by the camera specifications.
