What has been changed in Version 1.1.1 firmware?

The following fixes and improvements have been incorporated:

  1. It now supports high-capacity CF cards.
Previously, when using an 8GB CF card or greater (e.g.,12GB, 16GB), even after initializing the card in the camera, the CF card capacity could not correctly be detected.
This phenomenon has been fixed so that the camera will correctly recognize high-capacity CF cards.
  1. It allows the latest lens names to be recorded in the Exif information of images taken.
The lens IDs of lenses released after EOS5D are not in the camera; so these lens names could not be recorded in the Exif information of images. The lens IDs for the follwing new lenses are now included, so that the correct lens names will be recorded in the Exif information of images.

-EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM *1)
-EF 50mm f/1.2L USM *1)
-EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM *2)
-EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM *1)

The correct lens names for the lenses above marked *1) will be recorded in the Exif information of images.
The lens marked *2) has been added, if the firmware is version 1.1.0 or later.
  1. Lenses that are compatible with the Digital Photo Professional 3.2 lens aberration correction function have been added.
More lenses will be supported by the lens aberration correction function of Digital Photo Professional 3.2, Canon's RAW image viewer/editing software.
Specifically, the four lenses listed in item 2 above have been added. In images taken with these lenses and cameras updated to v1.1.1, the lens aberration correction function can be used.
For other supported lenses, see the user manual for DPP 3.2.

Are the previous versions of the firmware included in version 1.1.1?

Yes, the following improvements from the previous version are included:

Version 1.0.3 changes:

  1. Fixes the phenomenon of large image files (1.7GB) being created.
Fixes the phenomenon of large image files (1.7GB) being created when vertical images are taken with the Auto Image Rotation setting set to ON.
  1. Improves the brightness of the LCD monitor.
Improves the brightness of the LCD monitor, making it easier to check images outdoors.
  1. Fixes an operational abnormality in the AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting.
When shooting with the self-timer and AEB set to an exposure time of more than one second, the camera’s operation became abnormal after the first shot, but this has been fixed.
  1. Fixes the mistakes in the Swedish-language MENU displays.
There were mistakes in some of the Swedish-language displays; these have been fixed.

Version 1.0.5 changes:

  1. Fixes the phenomenon where the images are monochrome.
When selecting [Standard] in the Picture Style setting, and a maximum value of +4 in Color Density, some images taken with the sRGB color space setting could become low-saturation and monochrome-like images. In addition to [Standard] in the Picture Style, [Clear] and [Twilight] modes that are provided for download from the Canon Web site may also have this problem.
  1. Fixes the phenomenon where the shutter cannot be released when using the EOS 5D + EF85mm F1.2L + Speedlite580EX.
Serial

This malfunction could happen with some lenses or flashes other than this model. For EOS 5D units that contain 1 in the fifth digit of the body number (e.g., XXXX1XXXXX), the correction will not be reflected even if the firmware is updated to Version 1.0.5.

If you have an affected product that you would like to have fixed, please contact the nearest Canon Service Center. In addition, for products that have been repaired at our service center in the past, updating the firmware to Version 1.1.0 will retain these correction.

Version 1.1.0 changes:

  1. Enhancement of direct printing with specific printers*.
*The printing function in EOS5D will be improved in combination with the "PIXMA Pro 9000" or "PIXMA Pro 9500" professional photo printers that will go on sale later.
For setting details, please download the instruction manual (PDF file) at the end of this page.
  1. Correction of the communication errors that occured when shooting with EOS5D and EOS Capture software after shooting about 138 shots.
  1. Correction of the phenomenon in which the flash mode settings are changed from E-TTL to M(Manual) when EOS5D is used in combination with Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 and Speedlite 580EX.

How do I check the camera's current firmware version number?

screen shot

Turn the Power Switch <ON>, and press the <MENU> button to display the menu. Turn the Quick Control Dial, and you will see the "Firmware Ver.X.X.X" at the end of the settings shown in yellow, which is the currently installed firmware version number. For more details, please refer to the camera's instruction manual on page 33.

Note: Select <P> mode (or one of the other creative modes). The version of the firmware will not appear in the basic modes.

How do I update the firmware?

These are two ways to update the camera's firmware.

  1. Download the firmware file from this web site and install the update as shown in the updating procedure.
  2. Bring the camera to a Canon Service Center and have the firmware updated by the center.

If you choose the latter method, contact a Canon Service Center in your region.

Do I need any special equipment to update the firmware?

The firmware update file needs to be copied to a CF card, so a card reader or a computer with a card slot will be required.(This firmware cannot be downloaded directly to the camera via the USB interface cable.)

When using CF cards with a card reader, however, there are cases where a PC card adapter is necessary.

Other required equipment is listed below.

(1-A) Battery Pack BP-511A or BP-514 (The battery pack must be fully charged.)
(1-B) AC Adapter Kit ACK-E2 (sold separately)
(2) CF card (8MB or more, 2GB or less)

In order to supply power to the camera, either (1-A) or (1-B) is necessary.

I do not have the equipment necessary for the firmware update.

Please contact a Canon Service Center in your region.
